2HP Dust Collector SSH:Chicago https://wiki.sshchicago.org/wiki/2HP_Dust_Collector

Description

Dust collectors reduce airborne wood dust produced by woodworking equipment (a health and safety hazard), collecting it into a bin for later disposal. This mobile unit features a 2HP Harbor Freight motor and a cyclonic separator. It is equipped with a long 4" dust collection hose, which is compatible with most large woodworking equipment (bandsaw, planer, jointer, etc). It should be deployed when using any compatible equipment in an effort to control dust in the space.

Safety and Precautions

  1. Dust collector motor is rated for high current (up to 20A). DO NOT operate dust collector with other tools on the same circuit. Use only with extension cords that are 12AWG or higher.
  2. Dust collector is for wood use only.
  3. Fine wood dust is combustible and static electricity is a likely source of ignition. While parts of the dust collector are grounded and the chance of combustion is low, you should look out for ignition sources (open flames, welding sparks, static electricity, etc) before operating or emptying the dust collector.
  4. Airborne wood dust is a health hazard. Avoid breathing airborne dust when emptying the collector - consider wearing a dust mask.
  5. Avoid blocking the collector's intake completely when operating as this may crush the collector can.
  6. Avoid collecting large objects as they may become lodged in the system and create a blockage.

Usage Instructions

  1. Check that the collector can is not too full as excess dust will bypass the can and unintentionally fill the second stage's clear trash bag instead. See Emptying Collector Can under Maintenance.
  2. Verify that all system components are in place:
    • Collector can is correctly secured to the cyclone base with a good seal around the rim and in the correct position
    • Second stage's clear trash bag and filter bag are securely attached to the second stage housing
    • All intermediate connections are secure
  3. Attach intake hose to tool. Use hose clamps and adapters where necessary.
  4. Turn the dust collector on before turning on the tool.
  5. When finished using the tool, run the dust collector for a little while longer (~10sec) to allow for the dust to be fully collected.

Maintenance

Emptying Collector Can

The dust collector needs to be emptied periodically to ensure that it functions correctly. If you see sawdust bypassing the can and going into the second stage's clear trash bag, it's time to empty the can. if you think collector suction is affected, it may be time to empty the can.

  1. Ensure that the dust collector is off.
  2. Lift the cyclone base by flipping the 4 toggle clamps on the sides into the UP position. Avoid damaging the base by lifting two toggle clamps (at the same time) on one side first, and then the other two on the other side.
  3. Slide collector can out of the front of the collector.
  4. Empty collector can. It is acceptable to empty sawdust in the back yard in the effort to control weeds, but you didn't hear that from me.
  5. Inspect the underside of the cyclone base to ensure the rim seal (foam tape or silicon bead) is still good.
  6. Return collector can into the collector by sliding it from the front until it hits the center of the v-stop on the floor.
  7. Lower the cyclone base by flipping the 4 toggle clamps on the sides into the DOWN position. Avoid damaging the base by lowering two toggle clamps (at the same time) on one side first, and then the other two on the other side.
  8. Ensure that the collector can rim makes positive contact with the seal all around and is securely held in place by collector base.

Emptying Second Stage Trash Bag

The dust collector traps fine dust particles in the second stage, which consists of a hanging cloth bag above and a clear trash bag below. The clear trash bag should be periodically emptied as it fills up.

  1. Ensure that the dust collector is off.
  2. Shake cloth bag filter gently to empty excess particles into the clear trash bag. The cloth bag does not require additional maintenance as it needs to be "seasoned" with dust in order to function as intended.
  3. Unlatch strap clamp around the clear trash bag and remove clear trash bag.
  4. Empty clear trash bag.
  5. Reinstall clear trash bag onto second stage housing with strap clamp, ensuring it is fully sealed around the housing and that the bag edge extends over the clamp and can be rolled back over it. This is easier to do with two people. If you are doing this alone, holding bag up with magnets helps tremendously.

Future Improvements

Here are some things we can do to this dust collector moving forward:

  • Permanently install collector in the back shop and run permanent dust collection lines to all tools. The dust collector was designed and assembled with this in mind. Some materials to achieve this are already available.
  • Add a manometer for visual representation of system pressure. This can be as simple as clear tubing with colored water.
  • Install FastCap RCV for convenient operation. FastCap product not rated for heavy duty machinery (up to 15A only), so a different remote-starting contraption will need to be used.
  • Replace second stage with cartridge filter, possibly one with quick release pan.
  • Upgrade impeller with Rikon impeller for more better.
