This is a manual for ssh:c branding and style. Please refer to this page any time you are designing or editing public-facing documents that represent the hackerspace.

Name

The official full name of the hackerspace is South Side Hackerspace Chicago. It may be stylized as South Side Hackerspace: Chicago or simply South Side Hackerspace. In most texts and software applications, an abbreviation of the name is usually more appropriate. Acceptable abbreviations are (in order from most to least desired) ssh:chicago, ssh:c and sshc. It is OK to drop the colon from the abbreviation if necessary (e.g. software limitations). At this time there is no official suggestion for how to capitalize the abbreviation at the start of a proper sentence, although capitalizing a single letter (eg: Ssh:c) is discouraged.

Logo, Font and Colors

ssh:chicago logo

Our logo consists of a 6-pointed red "Chicago Flag" star encircled by a light blue 12-tooth ring gear. The circular inside of the gear has a white background (hereby referred to as the "roundel"), which may be omitted when the logo is used on a light background. This roundel is required on dark backgrounds. The logo design is combined with the text ssh:chicago on the right to form a horizontal banner, or with ssh:c underneath for a compact vertical version. Banner text is set in a free English version of DIN 1451.

The logo uses the hex color #cc0000 for the star and #58b9f7 for the blue gear. Logo and banners are to be normally set on a white background with black text. This combination is also appropriate with off-white and light grey backgrounds. For black and other dark backgrounds, invert the text to white and make sure to use the white roundel in the logo.

Designers wishing to use our logo may download the logo Adobe Photoshop file. For those without Photoshop, some rendered versions of the logo are available in the wiki file list. A fontkit for web development and print is available upon request from Dmitriy Vysotskiy.
