Language

Allocate $3000 of available funds for back room improvements.

Background

The back room has a few issues:

  • Often messy and difficult to navigate. There are a lot of tools and not a lot of room for them. Therefore, tools should be organized so that it's easier to put things away and keep the center of the room clear for maneuvering - give everything a home.
  • Woodworking dust settles on everything. Woodworking tools need to be tied in to dust collection. Overhead dust filtering should help capture whatever dust ports don't.
  • Electrical outlets are not always convenient or adequate - need more.
  • New table saw is coming and it should be installed properly in a dedicated location.

It's sensible to fix the above issues by spending available funds on back room improvement. Below is a proposal of tasks accomplish with given funds.

Electrical

  • Add circuit(s) along south, west and maybe north walls at chest height. Installation should not interfere with shelf framing and dust collection.
  • Create separate circuit for the 2HP dust collector.
  • Add circuit(s) on ceiling for electrical cord reel(s) and air filtration system.
  • Update air compressor electrical connection such that there is an outlet on loft's surface which can be controlled by an in-wall switch on the exterior of the server room wall.
  • Run single phase 220V 25A circuit to south wall near window/radiator for new table saw. (See New Table Saw section.)

Framing Lumber Shelving

Install shelving out of framing lumber on east and south walls. This shelving will be based on the design of existing shelving along the west wall, however it will use 10FT vertical members (instead of 8FT) and 2x6 lumber throughout for better strength. Existing west wall shelving shall be rebuilt as it's sagging and short.

Dust Mitigation

Dust mitigation plans assume that dusty woodworking (sawing, sanding, planing) will be constrained to the SE quadrant of the room.

Dust Collection

The 2HP dust collector is to be installed near entryway to the room, such that the collector is easy to empty and hook up to tools. 5" steel trunk duct shall run from dust collector with branches to new table saw, 4" tools and and overhead feed. A floor sweep will be connected at end.

Air Filtration

Install a JET 24770 air filtration system 2-3FT away from the south wall, roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the way down (measuring from the west side), 8-10FT from the floor (suspended from ceiling beams), intake facing SE quadrant. In other words, intake should be in path of table saw blade, behind table saw user. System will plug into new ceiling outlet. Pair of washable first stage filters to be purchased and rotated in-and-out for maintenance.

New Table Saw

The new table saw is expected in 2nd half of April, therefore this improvement project should happen ahead of then. It should be installed in the SE quadrant of the room, oriented such that it is fed west to east. The saw should be placed relatively close to the south wall and the dust collector ducting. It will required two dust collection hook-ups - one along the ground to the cabinet (120mm, ~5") and one from the top to the blade guard (50mm, ~2"). It will need it's own dedicated electrical circuit and wiring. All saw necessities may be funded by the remainder of the table saw budget

Cost Breakdown

Note that typical vendors were selected for budget reasons and thus the overall price is high. If donation requests or DIY/cost saving measures do not pan out, we still budget for full "retail" cost item. 25% contingency accounts for tax and shipping costs. This proposal commingles with the remaining funds in the Proposal to Purchase a Sliding Table Saw to support the proper installation of the saw (electrical and dust ducting needs). Any significant cost savings will be used to improve the 2HP Dust Collector with a new filter, dust bin, impeller, manometer (filter alarm) and/or proximity sensor (dust bin alarm).
