Description

The NOVA Voyager DVR (Digital Variable Reluctance) is a 110-120V single phase 1.75HP Drill press. It’s a versatile drill press and can handle wood, metal, plastics and glass. The DVR Motor drive is a unique type of motor and controller where the motor and controller interact. The motor provides data to the controller on its position and load conditions. The controller uses this data to handle all the timing and power management to ensure an energy efficient and powerful motor. The DVR integrated motor drive system contains four main parts, the DVR Motor (stator and rotor built into the headstock), the Rotor Position Sensor (RPS), the drive control board and the human-machine interface (HMI). The control board, RPS and HMI make up the electronic control system of the drive. The control board receives the commands from the user through the keypad and the HMI board, and it provides useful feedback information to the user such as the running speed and load on the motor. The information is displayed to the user via the LCD display. This video covers most features and operations: Overview and Operations Video

Safety and Certification

Hazards

  • The drill is very strong and is capable of grabbing, maiming, cutting, or/and dismembering body parts.
  • Drill spins from 50 - 5500 RPM and is capable of throwing unsecured work pieces and debris at operator and beyond
  • Drilling can produce fine dust that affects respiratory health
  • Work pieces may fall off the Drill and injure if improperly handled or secured
  • Avoid using the "self start" feature until you become comfortable with the machine, it can be hazardous and cause injury.

Prohibited Operations

  • Modifying/hacking the saw and its original accessories
  • Bypassing of saw safety features
  • Do not push several keys together as special coded combinations of keys open diagnostic and service functions. Some of these disable control and protection functions. If an unfamiliar screen is displayed, switch off the computer and leave for one minute before rebooting.
  • Do not change any options in the settings menu.

Pre-Operational Safety

  • Check self for loose clothing, hair and jewelry. REMOVE GLOVES.
  • Wear safety glasses.
  • If the machine hasn’t been used for some period (over one month) it is helpful to switch the power to the unit on 30 – 60 minutes before use.
  • Ensure emergency stop button is released.
  • Clear the drill of extraneous objects and remove any excess dust or debris from operational parts.
  • Make sure that drill parts are functioning as intended and that nothing is loose or damaged.
  • Set up any jigs, fences and safety equipment before turning the drill on.
  • Occasionally check and update firmware. Video Demo

Operational Safety

  • Avoid using the "self start" feature until you become comfortable with the machine, it can be hazardous and cause injury.
  • Do not push several keys together as special coded combinations of keys open diagnostic and service functions. Some of these disable control and protection functions. If an unfamiliar screen is displayed, switch off the computer and leave for one minute before rebooting.
  • Remove chuck key before engaging the drill!
  • Do not reach under drill until it has stopped moving.
  • Do not leave drill until chuck has come to a complete stop.
  • Do not adjust the fences while the chuck is spinning.
  • Do not move working stock, while the drill is being used; lateral pressure may damage the machine. **Exception** a drum sander maybe used on the drill press.

Basic Operations

  • After selecting the master power switch ON, located on the rear right side of the machine, the drill will take a moment to boot up, be patient. (Powering down will also take a moment, do not unplug the machine until the screen turns black.)

  • Bit installation and handling
    • Basic Functions:
      • The "ON" "OFF" buttons are used for engaging and disengaging the spindle. Video Demo
      • Rotary dial controls speed/rpm Video Demo
      • Manual depth gauge, left of chuck, can be adjusted Video Demo
    • Digital Control Functions. (Set desired settings on the user interface (Digital screen / HMI - Human machine interface)):
      • Use the "Zero" button, while extending your bit to touch material surface, to set digital depth gauge for your project. Video Demo
      • Use the "menu button" to navigate options and set project parameters.
      • The rotary dial is used both to scroll menus, and can also be pressed to make selections.
      • Most frequently used menu options allow user to set:
        • Drill speed, based on bit and material used.Video Demo
        • Depth auto-stop Video Demo
        • Auto-start. Note: Project material must be “zeroed” out in order to work properly. Video Demo
      • Some menus have alternate methods of making selections, and will be outlined how to do so on display screen.
      • Do not change anything in the settings menu.
    • Advanced Digital Features:
