Allocate $995 of available funds for the purchase of an embroidery machine and associated accessories.

Background

A little while back a thread was started discussing embroidery which led to talk about getting an embroidery machine for the space. The two main reasons we should purchase an embroidery machine and accessories are:

  • Increase our crafting capabilities in the space in order to appeal to a wider range of potential members.
  • Be able to create SSH:C and various interest group themed patches in house(like the Artemis 1 mission patch).

This proposal is to purchase the embroidery machine, additional hoops, starter supplies, and a digitized version of SSH:C's logo for embroidery. After the starting supplies are depleted it would be up to individual members to supply their own materials for projects. For this proposal there will be no software purchased. As was discussed in the email thread there are many options of varying pricing and quality. After we get the embroidery machine we can start testing different software and determine which one we want to buy. Based on reviews of Brother software it would seem like 3rd party software like Hatch Embroidery Composer is the best way to go.

Mike has reached out to Brother to see if they will offer a donation or discount. If this proposal is passed, purchase of the embroidery machine will be delayed until we have gotten a response from Brother or have determined that a reasonable amount of time has passed in which to expect a response.

The Embroidery Machine

Brother Embroidery Machine PE800

  • Embroidery only.
  • 5" x 7" working area.
  • 138 built-in designs, 11 lettering fonts, 10 frame shapes, and 14 border styles.
  • Color Touch LCD display that allows design editing like rotate, mirror image, and increase/decrease the size.
  • USB port to upload custom designs.

Additional Hoops

Embroidery Cap Hoop

  • This would allow us to embroider hats.

4pc Embroidery Hoop Set

  • For best results it's good to have an embroidery hoop that is close to the size of your design.

Starting Supplies

Tear Away Stabilizer Backing

  • Used on the back of whatever is being embroidered to strengthen it.
  • Once depleted members will have to supply their own.

63 Colors of Embroidery Machine Thread

  • Multiple colors to sample.
  • Once depleted members will have to supply their own.

Assorted Embroidery Needles

  • Replacement needles for if/when they wear out/break.
  • Two different sizes of needles for different fabric thicknesses.
  • When depleted this would be covered by the maintenance budget.

Digitized Version of our gearling for Embroidery

Since we won't have software to create our own designs at first we should at least get an embroidery file made of the gearling. Since the embroidery machine has a screen that allows simple design modifications we probably only need the gearling done. I found two online places that offer to do it, but I am open to other options as I don't have experience with either of these companies.

Cost Breakdown

As of right now the price is based on current promotions/sales as of March 16th, 2019 sourced through Amazon, thus an additional $155 has been added to reflect the full retail price of the embroidery machine. Mike has reached out to Brother to see if they will donate or offer a discount, this budget assumes we do not receive any donations or discounts. This budget also includes taxes based on shipping to my employer where I will be available to sign for delivery. Any money that remains in the budget will be released back to the general fund.
